Sunshine, elegant tableaux, kilted pipers and flag-waving youngsters
this was all part of the scene during the carnival procession that gave Brentford and Chiswick Civic Week a cheerful start on Saturday.
Crowds, thickest in Chiswick lined the pavments to welcome the mile-long cavalcade as it passed slowly along Brentford High Street, then Chiswick High Road on to Dukes Meadows.
The procession received a royal send-off from spectators at The Butts Brentford with people watching from windows.and balconies of houses and flats. And after the judging at Brentford market it finally reached Dukes Meadows more than two and a half hours later.
On the way four bands provided a miscellany of carnival music - and the skirl of the pipes added to the excitement.
Tartan-clad Scots on a lorry threw pieces of heather to the onlookers.
There was applause all along the route for the smart tableaux, many from local and outside firms and a few from local organisations. The bowler - hatted Old Contemptible's, among local organisations in the marching column earned a special cheer. Territorial Army, Navy Cadet, Air Training Corps, Army Cadet units and the Civil Defence were all represented.
A mammoth float entered by J Miller, the Chiswick bakery firm, got the judges' vote for the best trade entry. Whitbread's of Chiswick brought an 18th century dray, drawn by two fine -looking horses. And the might of industry on the Great West Road Brentford, had a prominent part in the procession. It was a festive occasion; everyone enjoyed it, especially the children.
Who enjoyed themselves most? Brentford Towns-women's Guild without a doubt.
Members were jubilant at receiving a first prize.
When the procession wound its way into Dukes Meadows the sun, a little shy after the morning's downpour, shone from a clear sky. With the blare of music from the nearby funfair in the background, the Mayor,Ald. Mrs Gladys Saint, presented prizes to winners of the procession classes. Saturday evening's festivities exploded brightly with a giant fireworks display at Dukes Meadows. Crowds drifted away from the open air dance to watch a dazzling half-hour show which could be seen from Chiswick High Road. Earlier, the Mayor switched on the flood lighting of Chiswick House and the grounds. there was a brass band concert and a display of country dancing late in the afternoon.
The Prizewinners
The cup for the best local trade tableau, presented by Market Sales Ltd, Brentford was won by J Miller and Co. Ltd. who also won the cup for the best overall entry presented by Brentford Chamber of Commerce.
Hampstead and District Scottish Association won a cup, presented by Lucozade Ltd for the best amateur tableaux.
The full week's programme up to Friday is:
Saturday: Carnival Procession, leaving the Butts, Brentford, at 2.30 pm, along the High Street; judging at Brentford market; along Chiswick High Road, Chiswick Lane, Great Chertsey Road and Riverside Drive; arriving Dukes Meadows 4.30; the Mayor presents prizes to winning entrants.
Concert by Hanwell Silver Band and country dancing displays, Dukes Meadows, 5.0 to 6.30 pm. Open-air dance with Chris Stone's orchestra and the "Corvetts", Dukes Meadows 7.15 to10.15 pm.
Fireworks display at Dukes Meadows, 10pm.
Sunday: Drumhead service organised by the British Legion Turnham Green 2.30 pm. Representative football match arranged by Chiswick and District Sunday Football League, Homefields recreation ground 3 pm. Conducted tour of Chiswick House grounds, 6.30 pm.
Monday: "The Geisha" presented by West London Light Opera Society, Chiswick Town Hall, 7.30 pm, admission 5s, 3s, 6d. and 2s 6d.
Brains Trust Brentford secondary modern boys school, 8 pm; chairman, Freddy Crisewood.
Tuesday: Six-a-side youth football competition, preliminary rounds, Boston Manor Park, Brentdford, 7.30 pm.
Wednesday: Swimming Gala (between Acton, Brentford, Ealing, Hounslow and Isleworth swimming clubs), Brentford baths 7 pm. admission 2s (bathside) and 1s (gallery). Boy Scouts and Girl Guides camp fire, St Paul's recreation ground, Brentford 8 pm.
Thursday: Afternoon cricket match for Civic Week Cup, Turnham Green. Conducted tour of Chiswick House Grounds, starting from parks department, 6.30 pm. Six-a-Side youth football competition, preliminary round, Boston Manor Park 7.30 pm. Lecture, arranged by Brentford and Chiswick Local History Society, "The geographical basis of Brentford" by Mr K. F. Dalton. Chiswick Library 7.45 pm. Brains Trust Chiswick Town Hall 8 pm; chairman Freddy Gisewood.
Friday: Swimming Gala (life saving and canoeing displays by Hounslow S.C. and Richmond Canoeing Club), Brentford Baths 7 pm. admission 2s 6d (bathside) and 1s 6d (gallery),
Concert arranged by Fayrfax Recital Club Chiswick Town Hall, 8 pm, Cyrill Smith and Phyllis Sellick (two Pianos).
